So there's this crow that always flies over to my window at precisely 8:39 am in the morning. Sometimes it gets annoying with its noises and other times, it gets creepy with its silences. Like what are you hiding from me, you little gremlin? What do you know?

And then my old neighbour told me that this is a Sign. I mean, sure, some people here believe that your ancestors sometimes visit you in the form of crows or something but... that seems unlikely.

Because what exactly is my crow ancestor trying to tell me, coming exactly at 8:39 am and perching next to what I call my aesthetic shelf (which mostly consists of pretty pictures of Eartha Kitt)? That she's really hot and really iconic? Well, I know that-

Judges' Remarks: Okay, at over eight minutes, this movie is way too long . . . but I was impressed at the commitment and detail! Great cinematography and editing, fantastic acting, and superior production values all the way through—with a satisfyingly huge cast too! I liked the resourceful but not overdone use of green screen that put the characters in the various settings, and I also appreciated the attention to costumes: the orange shirts for the prisoner kids, the cowboy hats for the prison guards and administrators, the fake mustache, and even a wig and judicial robes for the judge! Splendid! This movie hit most of the iconic moments from the book, such as the shoes dropping from the sky onto Stanley, the courtroom scene, and the prisoners digging in the hot sun (some even with shovels—I did notice somebody was digging with drumsticks?!). I thought it was smart to use a black-and-white filter for the the flashbacks, which helped keep the two timelines distinct—and in the flashback, I thought Madame Zeroni's accent was well done, and that singing of her song was a good touch. (Another goofy moment from the flashback: how Sam was "fixing" things for Kissin' Kate basically just by banging two drumsticks together.) There was a smart use of the playground structure to represent the mountain, such as when Stanley's grandfather is trying to climb it via the slide, or when Stanley and Zero are hiding in its caves. The scene with the yellow spotted lizards worked very well, especially with the dramatic music and close-ups on the lizards. The occasional dubbing also made the spoken dialogue easier to follow. The ebullient, authentic-feeling, energetic performances were a highlight of this movie, and I loved how everyone seemed totally committed to it (especially in that nail polish / snake venom scene, or when Stanley and Zero are seemingly gobbling mud out of the ground). But I must say my favorite part of the movie was actually in the credits, with the rewritten version of Elton John's "I'm Still Standing"—that is, "I'm Still Stanley"! The lyrics were clever, the singing was on-point, and it was really fun! Overall, a very impressive effort.

TR25 | Reimagined Covers: Tomb Raider III

Back in February, Crystal Dynamics debuted a special project that aimed to reimagine the box art of the mainline entries in the series. Each one features a different artist and their unique take on the game they were assigned with and is set to be released monthly throughout 2021.

For Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft (1998), the team unveiled this beautiful modern illustration designed by the talented Paul Kwon, also known as Zeronis, a professional digital artist and former Senior Concept Artist at Riot Games who worked on League of Legends for the past 10 years.

Below you can find his words on the making of this piece and a download link with it in various sizes so you can customize all of your devices.

"Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider series has become one of the most iconic characters in the video game industry. For my reimagining of Lara, I revisited her outfit from Tomb Raider III and gave it a modernized twist to the design while still capturing the original essence.

The pose is quite simple with the dual pistols that we are all familiar with. Yet, I wanted to depict her caught in the moment of stillness surrounded by digital fragments of artifacts amidst the holographic desert setting. The style of the background and the abbreviated title are heavily leaning towards the simple, technical and graphical designs to give that modernized look for the whole illustration.

In terms of the style and execution, I went with the flow of what I’m most familiar with and tried to reminisce the character with some design sensibilities in mind."

Um, it's a picture of a waterfall I took on a hike a few years back, and while I probably could change my pic to Helen I like this one

The building in my header is the remains of a hotel, and I actually took the pictures for my header and icon on the same day, but they were two separate hikes and the hike for this pic was about three hours uphill and it was... a mistake to do after the first one

Okay, y'all we gotta talk just a bit about the fantastic, the incomparable, Queen Eartha Kitt. She was more than just Catwoman and this badass political activist. Our generation might recognize her more from voicing Yzma in The Emperor's New Groove and Madame Zeroni in Holes, but she was originally famous for signing and had multiple top 30 hits in the early fifties because, get this, she could speak 4 languages fluently but could sing in 11 languages total! (Santa Baby, anyone?) A fashion icon as well, Diana Ross is said to have claimed Eartha Kitt as her biggest influence in sound and style!

And, while, undoubtedly her badass activism stymied her career in an overly patriotic, deeply divided, racist country, it may make folks at least slightly happy to know that rat bastard LBJ couldn't keep this bad bitch down forever. Despite his bull, she managed to win two Emmys, two Tony awards, and have a career that lasted well over fifty years, from Broadway to voice-over.

She was also a very vocal supporter of LGBTQIA+ rights and gay marriage, an all around wonderful woman. Eartha released three autobiographies in her lifetime, I'd suggest that you give any of them a read!
